Distributors – are the clamps you’re distributing bad for your brand?

Distributors working with hose clamp companies who simply source products rather than make them themselves could be damaging their brand and losing money.

We are known to make a big deal of the fact that every part and component of our clamps are made in-house at our specialist facility in Suffolk. And we make no apology for continuing to emphasise this information, as we believe it’s fundamental to the proposition we offer the businesses who use our clamps and the distributors we work with.

Assured of quality

Not only does this mean that our distributors can say with all confidence that our clamps are Made in Britain – an initiative we wholeheartedly back.

It also means they can be assured that every JCS clamp they distribute is of the highest quality. This is because only by controlling every aspect of the manufacturing process – even down to having our own electro-plating operation in-house – can we know this.

Under-One-Roof approach

But this under-one-roof approach is unusual in the modern manufacturing world where global supply chains allow companies to outsource their manufacturing.

In fact, we know that many of our competitors, including some household names, have their products made by third-party manufacturers. Some may assemble the parts in the UK, others simply buy in the clamps fully-assembled with their own branding.

A warning for distributors

Looking at our own operation, we wonder how hose clamp manufacturers who use this model can possibly be able to control the quality of their products when they are shipping them in from the other side of the world.

We also wonder what sense this arrangement makes to distributors – who are working with companies who have simply sourced product from elsewhere rather than made it themselves.

Aside from the damage to the distributor’s brand caused by sub-standard product, aren’t they, in effect, simply distributing products passed on to them by another distributor? And wouldn’t it make more sense if they went straight to the manufacturer abroad and cut out the middle man, thus improving their profit margins?

We say unless you are working with a hose clamp manufacturer who makes his own products – distributors need to be aware they are highly likely to be damaging their brand and finding themselves out of pocket.
