JCS Hose clamps aircraft manufacturers

How JCS hose clips help the aviation industry

One of the many industries where JCS’ hose clamps are used is the aviation sector, and are trusted across the globe by both manufacturers of aircraft and ground equipment.

A number of JCS distributors sell to aerospace businesses who require high-quality clamps for a wide variety of specialist applications such as securing air intakes, sanitation hoses, and oxygen supplies aboard crafts.

Standards

SP.91 was the first Aviation industry standard for hose clamps and was originally released in January 1962, later superseded by 2SP.91 in May 1973. Both standards covered carbon steel worm drive hose clamps with serrated bands for aircraft use. The associated SP.92 and 2SP.92 Standards of the same dates covered hose clamps with a fully perforated band.

SP.91 was based on the original BS3628 British standard for worm drive hose clamps. Now obsolete the standard has been updated and replaced by the BS5315:1991 which all JCS Hi-Grip clamps are built to and exceed. All Hi-Grip carry Kitemark approval to this most recent standard

Ongoing improvements

As the 2SP.91 standard has not been updated for many years, finding clamps built specifically to it is becoming more and more difficult. Even at JCS, with our own tool room facility, the decision was made many years ago not to replace the tooling for the bespoke aviation clamp sizes but to offer customers our standard Hi-Grip range.

We have supplied Hi-Grip hose clamps together with a certificate of conformity to a number of customers wanting clamps for aircraft use in place of the SP.91 clips. As Hi-Grip perform far in excess of the SP.91 requirements most customers are pleased to fit a clamp with a higher safety margin.

For those wondering why the clamps cannot conform fully to the SP.91 is simply a matter of dimensional differences between imperial and metric sizing and adjustment ranges. Customers can have full confidence in our products knowing that the operational requirements of the BS5315:1991 far exceed the original BS3628 which the SP.91 is based upon.

Anyone working in the industry knows one of the most important factors is traceability. All JCS clamps and components are designed, manufactured, assembled and tested in house following a strict ISO9001 quality system meaning our level of control is industry leading.
