Sustainability

Engineering Responsibility into Everything We Do

At JCS, sustainability is not a marketing initiative; it is a practical commitment embedded into how we manufacture, invest, and operate. As a British manufacturer supplying critical components to global industries, we recognise our responsibility to reduce environmental impact while maintaining the reliability, quality, and consistency our customers expect.

Our approach is clear: measurable actions, long-term investment, and continuous improvement.

Eco-Powered Production: Investing in Renewable Energy

In September 2022, JCS made a major investment in on-site renewable energy at our Sudbury headquarters. A 700kW solar park, supported by a 500kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), now supplies a significant proportion of our manufacturing power requirements.

This infrastructure allows us to generate clean electricity directly where it is used, reducing reliance on the national grid while improving energy resilience across our operations. When generation exceeds demand, surplus electricity is exported back to the grid, supporting wider decarbonisation efforts.

Why Solar? Why Now?

Self-sufficiency has always been central to the JCS approach. Investing in solar energy enables us to:

  • Reduce exposure to volatile energy markets
  • Lower operational carbon emissions
  • Maintain long-term stability in manufacturing costs
  • Protect supply continuity for our customers

Sustainability, for JCS, must make operational sense as well as environmental sense.

Real Impact, Measured Performance

Since commissioning the solar park:

  • 55% of production energy demand has been met through on-site solar generation
  • 110MWh of electricity has been exported back to the UK grid

These figures are independently metered and tracked, ensuring transparency and accountability in our sustainability reporting.

Supporting Low-Carbon Transport

To further reduce indirect emissions, JCS has installed eight EV charging points at our Sudbury site. This supports employees transitioning to electric vehicles and encourages lower-carbon commuting. By investing in practical infrastructure, we enable sustainable choices without compromising accessibility or convenience.

Efficient Manufacturing, Built to Last

Sustainability in manufacturing goes beyond energy generation. JCS products are engineered for durability, longevity, and performance under extreme conditions. By designing components that last longer and perform reliably, we help reduce:

  • Premature replacement
  • Material waste
  • Unplanned maintenance and downtime

Our in-house manufacturing model ensures tight control over material selection, process efficiency, and quality assurance, reducing scrap, rework, and unnecessary transport.

Responsible Materials and Process Control

JCS products are manufactured using high-grade stainless steels and traceable raw materials, sourced to meet strict performance and compliance standards. Our vertically integrated production model allows us to:

  • Minimise waste through precision machining
  • Maintain full batch traceability
  • Continuously refine processes for efficiency

Wherever possible, materials are selected for recyclability and long service life.

Looking Ahead

Our sustainability journey is ongoing. Future priorities include:

  • Expanding on-site renewable generation
  • Improving energy efficiency across manufacturing processes
  • Continued investment in low-carbon infrastructure
  • Transparent measurement of environmental performance

By taking a long-term, engineering-led approach to sustainability, JCS is building a manufacturing operation designed to perform responsibly, today and for generations to come.
