JCS delighted to sponsor Pip Hare and Medallia racing yacht team

Sailing the earth’s oceans is one of the toughest challenges. It requires determination, and physical and mental strength, alongside hard-wearing and reliable equipment as resilient as the sailors themselves. Pip Hare and her Medallia racing yacht team, and JCS are therefore a natural fit, and we’re delighted to be offering them sponsorship for the next 3 years, up to and including the Vendee Globe race in 2024. Our products have supported Pip and her team for many years, and it is fantastic to underline our partnership with this commitment.

Here’s what our director, Edward Mockridge had to say:

“Pip’s determination to compete in the vendee globe in 2020, and the obstacles that she had to overcome just to get on the start line, let alone actually finish the race, just go to prove how resourceful she is.  I was personally extremely proud to have supplied Pip with the Hose Clips that kept her in the race last time around, and we are all absolutely delighted to be able to increase our support for Pip and her team for the next Vendee Globe in 2024.”

Meet Pip Hare and the Medallia team

Pip Hare has enjoyed a professional sailing career of more than 30 years, taking on most of the world’s oceans.

She broke into solo sailing after entering the OSTAR race from Plymouth, UK, to Newport, USA. Since then, Pip has worked her way through the international ranks of ocean racing, competing in all major classes to become one of the most respected sailors in the world.

Medallia is an experience management firm sponsoring Pip and her team and urging them on to ever-greater achievements.

How JCS has helped Pip

JCS Hi-Torque hose clips have become an essential item in Pip’s emergency repair and maintenance kits. During her debut IMOCA race in 2019, the clips came into their own after a pin holding the gooseneck came out due to a worn thread. It meant the mast came loose and tried to rotate, which could have catastrophic consequences for her vessel.

Pip says:

“After looking around the whole boat to try and find a way of holding this pin with the thread stripped in place, I found my JCS Hi-Torque hose clip and actually used that.”

She wrapped the clip over the head of the pin and around the base of the fitting to hold the pin in place and the mast in a central position for the rest of the race.

Pip continues:

“A small piece of engineering was able to hold all of the power of a 60-foot IMOCA with 600 m² of sail. I think it’s phenomenal, and it’s a testament to not only the engineering of the product and quality of the product but it also shows the versatility of something like a humble hose clip. They will definitely be in my emergency kit the next time I go around the world.”

Future of racing

Pip’s next race will see her take her place in the Route De Rhum among 138 solo sailors. They’ll set sail on 6th November to cross the Atlantic between Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe.

Pip says:

“When I go racing, we are really weight sensitive, there’s not much room on the boat to store things, but also every item of weight that we bring has to justify its existence, so we’re often looking for multifunctionality from the things that we take on board, and we won’t just want one item of equipment to cover one job.”
